Deer freezers

Freezer sizing for deer, venison, and the rest of hunting season

A whitetail averages ~50 lb of packaged venison. If you tag two and your buddy drops off backstraps, you'll fill a 7 cu ft freezer fast. Here's how to plan for the season.

Packaging & cut notes

  • Ground venison + breakfast sausage stack tightly — most space-efficient cut.
  • Backstraps and tenderloins benefit from vacuum sealing; freezer paper is fine for ground.
  • Label everything: animal, year, cut. Venison from year 1 looks identical to year 3 in February.
  • Add a freezer alarm — losing a season of meat to a kicked plug or outage is a real risk.

Chest vs upright?

Chest freezers are typically more efficient and cheaper per cubic foot. Uprights are easier to organize and access. ENERGY STAR notes top-opening chest doors lose less cold air.

FAQ

How long does frozen venison last?

Ground venison: ~4 months for best quality. Whole cuts (backstrap, roasts): 8–12 months. It stays safe indefinitely at 0°F per USDA — quality is what degrades.

Should I get chest or upright for deer?

If you're storing one or two deer with mostly ground, a small chest is cheapest. If you cook from the freezer regularly, an upright pays off in time saved digging.
